Venice Venezia Italy 2014 – 2020

The first time I visited Venice, Italy I remember the weather forecast predicted rain all weekend. Every time I say this to anyone, the first thing they say is “oh what a shame!”

Yes, the rain was heavy and not great to walk in, but great at clearing the many tourists from the Venetian streets and great for taking photographs. Umbrellas were everywhere! There was a grand little passageway with some classic Italian or Roman paintings, it was quite dark inside this passage way, but it was dry. So I set up my Nikon d850 on a tripod and waited. Many people passed through until this gentleman walked down with his umbrella, not realising that I had also captured another gentleman, very smarty dressed in a checked suit also with an umbrella. The first time I printed this image I made the area undercover very dark to highlight the passage of light coming from outside as well as the gentleman with his umbrella walking in. It was a year or so later when I reprinted this photograph and that I actually for the first time saw the other gentleman with the suit on. This lead me to totally revaluate the photograph by lightening the inside area and highlighting the other gentleman as the main focal point, with what you see today.

Venice is a beautiful city and you can quite easily see how this is one of the most photographed city in the world. However, it was quite frightening when I saw one of the largest cruise ships ever arriving in the port between St Marks Square and Isola di san Giorgio Maggiore down the Giudecca canal.
